Militant vs Terrorist

NPR : Internal Contradictions on NPR?

The above link is just for reference. It has a discussion on the use of the word militant versus the word terrorist. I've been thinking for some days now on who exactly is a terrorist and who is a militant.

dictionary.com tells me that a militant is

Having a combative character; aggressive, especially in the service of a cause
or Fighting or warring.

However, a terrorist is one who practices terrorism and terrorism in turn is defined as :

The unlawful use or threatened use of force or violence by a person or an organized group against people or property with the intention of intimidating or coercing societies or governments, often for ideological or political reasons

With this small introduction, think of the Kashmir problem. Look at cross-border terrorism happening in Kashmir. We daily see that a few people are killed here and there. And this is every day. Not a day goes by without somebody or the other getting killed in Kashmir. Now what do you call the perpetrators of these acts ? Moreover the victims are usually innocent. Are they terrorists or militants ? Look at it from an Indian perspective.

Looking at the above definitions - any Indian would say that the Islamic insurgents are without a doubt, terrorists. But look at what the Indian press says.

Even when the Indian Parliament was attacked - the perpetrators of these acts were referred to as militants. When Akshardham was attacked - the perpetrators were called 'fidayeen' and militants. The word 'fidayeen' seems to justify that act! Calling them that will bring sympathy to the terrorist cause - but not do justice to the victims. If they were really fighting somebody, militants shouldn't be killing innocent people. By doing that these so called militants have already crossed over to "terrorist-land".

Yet our newspapers (the Indian English media) don't seem to understand. I think they don't want to understand. I've seen them refer to somebody who throws a stone at a bus as a militant. Somebody who blows up a bus full of people in Kashmir is also called a militant. Is this characterization fair ? Doesn't it seem obvious that the Kashmir problem perpetrators are terrorists ? Why desist from calling a spade a spade ? Why that pussyfooting around this problem ? Isn't conveying the truth the most fundamental responsibility of a newspaper ? By using words like "militants", they just condone these violent acts.

But I have to say that the Indian English press uses only one word all the time. So they can't be blamed for lack of consistency. Step up and call a spade a spade!

In the above link, there is talk of inconsistency in reporting news by NPR. Though I've enjoyed and occasionally still enjoy NPR programming, I've seen them leaning left on several occasions. Not that leaning left is bad, but the truth is more important. If you as a news disseminating agency know the truth, you should report it as close to the truth as possible.

Of course, the choice of terrorist vs militant (or even martyr) depends on who is making the choice. Words themselves lend to this subjectivity as one man's terrorist can unfortunately be another's freedom fighter. The British during their occupation of India could refer to Bhagat Singh as a terrorist (I don't know if Bhagat Singh killed any innocent people) whereas for Indians, he was a revolutionary and a freedom fighter. I suppose only history decides whether X was a martyr, terrorist or militant (or that word extremist). And history is always written by the victors. I've come full circle now. I don't seem to know what word to use any better now than before writing this.

I still have a gut feeling though, that Kashmiri insurgents should be called terrorists. And this is because of the systematic killing (genocide ?) of Kashmiri Pandits and chasing them away from their land and households. This is also because of their killing and kidnapping of other innocent people (Muslims, foreigners). We've seen LeT members being referred to as terrorists all over the world. When the same people engage in violence in Kashmir, why not call them terrorists ? It is for this uniformity that I think they should be called terrorists.

But at the end of all, I sometimes feel, the act has been done. People died. How can a small word change help those who are dead? Those alive can continue to quibble over words, but all thoughts stop when you think of those that died.

'That Tower' has nothing to do with saint Kanaka

'That Tower' has nothing to do with saint Kanaka

Bad Indian Science and my idea of Karma

This is the goodnewsindia link

This is the kind of stuff I am talking about when I say bad science. Looking at the claim, you can see that it is a fake. "Unseen atmospheric and gravitational forces" - should make you think twice.

The bad thing is that goodnewsindia.com got cheated in this case and got sound criticism from a Nobel Laureate. Goodnewsindia has been a good site and the fact that they have quickly published this recantment shows how good they are.

Now, if some one knows that their claims are false, how can you have the courage to lay stake to that claim in front of a million people ?

In KannaDa, the story of puNyakOTi is a very famous one. It speaks of a cow puNyakOTi's adherence to truth in the face of life threatening odds. That love of truth is what marks sanAtana dharma. Even if the truth is against one, it is expected for one to adhere to truth under all possible circumstances. Such is the love of truth in Indian culture.

But unfortunately, all these teachings and wisdom are left to rot in books. We Indians have the highest standard of ethics and morals, if we are to judge these standards by what is found in Hindu scriptures. However, the implementation is pathetic.

Some people follow Dharma in a unique way. First, they take bribes (I am not talking of cases where one is 'forced' to take a bribe. In those cases, even otherwise truthful people are forced to compromise for fear of their lives.) and use them. Then the fear of doing something immoral haunts them. So what recourse do they take ? They perform a homa (sacrifice) at home (of course, with the bribe money itself) and think that their sins have been pardoned. Of course, the reason for the homa is not mentioned to anybody. This is just like a Christian confession.

The idea behind Confession is also good. The doer of sin should muster courage to talk about it to a third party. The fear of doing that keeps the person from performing another sin. But now, people commit sins and think that they are pardoned after confessing to their favorite priest.

But the law of karma works differently. You will get payback for whatever you did. It may not be now. It may not be in the way you expect it. But it will affect you. As the Bible (?) says "as you sow, so shall you reap". This is the inviolable law of karma - which is also referred to as Ruta in the veda.

prAyashchitta (loosely translated as atonement) is meant to address the bad deed done by the person. It tries to make sure that it is not repeated in the future. But that action will still have its reaction.

With all this theory, people still commit 'sins' (what is sin - is a deep question. But one will know when one has sinned) and weep when they receive the fruits, be it in this birth or subsequent ones.

Karma cannot be proved. But it cannot be disproved either. It is one of those supernatural concepts - yet applicable in our everyday life.

I have a simple experiment. Suppose you have 'n' choices to make. Suppose all choices appear reasonable to you. What choice will you finally make ? What is it that makes the choice ? I am not talking of obvious choices like a bottle of poison v/s a bottle of orange juice. But more like a choice between apple juice and orange juice.

The actual process of choice making is indeed mysterious. After having made the choice, we move back and forth. I suppose Robert Frost's poem "The Road not taken" (wow, how this came to mind!) sums it up pretty well! Amazingly - I just read it - (you can read it here
) it does!

Even Robert Frost does not know the answer. What is it that made him choose one path over the other ? Especially in the face of incomplete knowledge. As I see it, this is your old karma acting. The latent tendencies of the mind are referred to as vAsanas and our past karma affects us this way.

Let me know if some one who reads this agrees or disagrees.

Kanchi mutt's junior seer arrested, remanded to 15 days judicial custody - Newindpress.com

Kanchi mutt's junior seer arrested, remanded to 15 days judicial custody - Newindpress.com

Delete 'Sindh' in 'Jana Gana Mana'?

Delete 'Sindh' in 'Jana Gana Mana'?

The Supreme Court (I got angry - but don't want to vent all my anger for fear of contempt of court) wants to delete Sindh from the National Anthem "jana gaNa mana". The "offending" line is "panjAba-sindhu-gujarAta-marATha-drAviDa-utkala-vanga".
India has been independent for more than 50 years now. Why now the sudden need to change this line ? Sindh was gone from India before this song was officially chosen as the National Anthem of India. Why did they not change this before ? Why is it only now ?

The obvious reason for this is that the Sind province is no longer in India - but in Pakistan and since the National Anthem must contain only places within India, Sindh would have to be deleted. Poor Rabindranath Tagore must be weeping in heaven (the term 'turning in his grave' won't work here as we know that he was cremated).

The National Anthem gives us an idea of how India was in those days. I, for one, don't like it as India's national anthem was written to welcome George V (the then King of Britain) to India. It praises George V as - jana-gaNa-mana-adhinAyaka - the Lord of the minds of the teeming masses. This can now be re-interpreted as something like "the spirit of India" or God or something like that. The reason for its composition itself is reason enough to not use this as our Anthem. Vande Mataram is a more apt choice, but some darned irrational pseudo-secularists object because it has obvious references to Hindu Deities. The complete song has - tumi durga tumi dharma tumi hRudi tumi marma. Vande Mataram - the slogan that galvanised millions to the cause of Indian Independence had been discarded in favor of a mediocre poem (RN Tagore has written far better poems than this) that smacks of servile praise of one's colonial master. India as a free country should not be subjected to such nonsense. Anyway, this poem is worse than "God save the queen" (or king) as at least there - you are appealing to a higher power. But in our Anthem - the sovereign is appealed to - "tava shubha nAme gAhe - tava shubha Ashisha mAnge' - your glorious name is sung and your auspicious blessings are sought - by the states of punjab, sindh, gujarat...... Mother India, I think, weeps everytime She listens to this effusive praise unbefitting any mortal.

Even though I don't like it personally, I stand up everytime it is sung for it denotes my country. Respecting the anthem is respecting the country. Anyway, this song still has a good thing in its favor of depicting history and reminding us everyday of the horrors of Partition. Because - when somebody sings PanjAba-sindhu.... , an inquisitive child may ask - "but sind is in Pakistan - how can we sing about it ? " That gives us a unique opportunity of explaining to it the history of India and its national anthem and why Sind is no longer in India. Removing Sindh is tantamount to obliterating and expunging this fact from public knowledge. History should be remembered - so that we don't go wrong again in the future. The National anthem for all its flaws reminded us of that. Now our government itself is directing us to remove Sindh from the anthem. What a sorry state of affairs!
